Joint Achievement of Yi Handwriting Recognition Technology by China Ethnic Languages Translation Bureau and SMU
SMU News, March 14 Yi handwriting recognition technique, jointly developed by China Ethnic Languages Translation Bureau and Professor Shama Layi, Associate Professor Wang Chengping, Jin Pin and Qumu shige of SMU, was officially launched in recent days.
SMU information technology R&D center on minority languages comprised a research group with professor Shama Layi as its core to develop Yi handwriting recognition technique. We gave full play to our strength in the research of language and information processing, tackling key problems with China Ethnic Languages Translation Bureau. Both sides took a serious discussion on Yi fonts display, input mode, handwriting styles, handwritten data acquisition and its pattern recognition law. With experiments over and over again, we managed to develop Yi handwriting recognition finally.
As early as 2014, professor Shama Layi and associate professor Wang Chengping successfully developed Yi mobile pinyin input method. So far, we have successfully completed R&D tasks of Yi mobile pinyin input and handwriting input method based on Android and iOS, promoting Yi script to step into the era of handheld communication.
At present, Yi recognition technology can be applied to Yi mobile phone input method on various Android and iOS systems, further improving the input efficiency of Yi script. The launch of Yi handwriting recognition is a major event in the cultural development of Yi ethnic group, which remarkably advanced the protection and development of Yi language and its traditional culture.
