SMU News on November 19. The 2020 Fourth Sichuan Province Chemistry Experiment Competition for Undergraduate Students was held successfully. It was sponsored by the Education Department of Sichuan Province and organized by Southwest Petroleum University. Three teams from the School of Chemistry & Environmentof SMU participated in the competition, including three teachers, Li Qinghan, Zhou Lin, and Zhong Ying, who led 15 class-of-2018 students majoring in Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, and Chemistry and Environmental Sciences. Their competitors were 51 teams from 18 colleges and universities including Southwest Jiaotong University, Southwest Petroleum University.
The Competition had two separate parts, examining Chemistry experiment theories and comprehensive laboratory skill, covering core knowledge in 4 professional courses, Inorganic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Physical Chemistry. The Competition particularly tested the participants’ overall capacities for practical use of theories, experiment design, experiment operation, and teamwork. During the latter part of the Competition, the participants were required to finish tasks within 8 hours, involving designing the experiment plan, choosing the operation order, installing equipment, synthesizing the product, analyzing the characterization, writing experiment reports, etc.
Participants from our university competed with calmness, close cooperation, and skillful operation, showing good experiment skills and teamwork spirit, and were praised by both the judges and other participating universities. After open and careful reviews from the judges, the three teams were awarded with provincial-level prizes including two second prizes and one third prize, being the fifth in the final grade ranking.
The Competition is an important extension to university Chemistry experiment curriculum, which aims to guide the students in deepening the connection between theoretical and practical learning, cultivate their awareness of teamwork and responsibility. Besides, in the spirit of Green Chemistry, it hopes to improve their creativeness. Moreover, it is a perfect opportunity to make colleges and universities focus more on the cultivation of their undergraduates’ mastery of scientifical theories, virtues, practical ability, as well as humanities attainments in elementary experiment segment, better fostering a new generation of well-educated professionals.
