Institute of Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau Research (IQTPR) was established at the end of 2012, which is an integral part of the “One Body and Two Wings” development strategy of Southwest University for Nationalities (SWUN). It was built on the basis of the former Management Committee of the High-Tech Research Demonstration Base for Ecological Protection and Animal Husbandry in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. Currently, IQTPR has over 40 full-time and part-time faculty members, of whom 16 are professors or research fellows, 12 are associate professors or associate research fellows and 26 hold doctor’s degrees. Eight faculty members are academic and technological pace-setters or candidates for the pace-setters at the provincial level. Six experts are entitled to Special Government Allowances of the State Council. Furthermore, IQTPR offers two postgraduate programs: ecology and genetics, accommodating more than 30 postgraduates.
IQTPR has established seven innovative teams with salient features, reasonable structures, a highly innovative level of research, and great influence both at home and abroad. They are the “Innovative Team for Genetic Resources Protection and Utilization of Yak and Tibetan Sheep”, the “Innovative Team for Eco-environment Protection in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau”, the “Innovative Team for Germplasm Resources and New Variety Breeding of Plateau Forages”, the “Innovative Team for Nutrition and Healthy Feeding Technology of Plateau Livestock”, the “Innovative Team for Disease Prevention and Control of Plateau Livestock”, the “Innovative Team for Featured Organic Animal Product Processing Technology and Engineering in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau”, and the “Innovative Team for Ethnic Medicines in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau”. It houses the Collaborative Innovation Center for Ecological Animal Husbandry in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (2011 Collaborative Innovation Center of Sichuan Province), the Key Laboratory for Protection and Utilization of Animal Genetic Resources in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau of Sichuan Province, the Engineering Technological Research Center for Grass-Feeding Livestock in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau of Sichuan Province, the SWUN Yak Research Center, and other basic and application-based research platforms. In addition, it has over 300 large and medium-sized instruments and devices worth over RMB 60 million.
