School of Preparatory Education

Southwest University for Nationalities (SWUN) is one of the first universities that enroll ethnic preparatory students in China. Since its birth in 1951, SWUN has offered preparatory programs of different types and levels, and trained more than 20,000 preparatory students for universities all over China. These students came from 56 ethnic groups of more than 40 schools in 30 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities. Since the start of the new century, SWUN has made great improvements in the scale and quality of preparatory education. In 2003, the Department of Preparatory Education was renamed School of Preparatory Education (SPE). In 2009, SPE was selected as a “national college preparatory education base for minorities” by the Ministry of Education. In the same year, the Lab for Preparatory Education Base was completed and the Research Center for Preparatory Education of Minorities was established.
At present, there are 869 students from 42 ethnic minorities at SPE. After they finish their study at SPE, these students will go to seven universities for their undergraduate studies, including Fudan University, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Sichuan University and SWUN. The school has 44 full-time faculty members, 18 of whom are minorities. Among the faculty members, 29 hold master’s degrees or above, of whom two hold and five are studying for doctoral degrees. Eleven of the faculty members are associate professors and one is a professor. There are 10 full-time or part-time head teachers at SPE. The school consists of five teaching divisions: the departments of Chinese, mathematics, English, computers, and ethnic theories. In 2013, it set up the Teaching Committee, the Management Committee, and the Scientific Research Committee.
Based on years of practice, SPE has developed a system of preparatory education by integrating the modules of “basics, expansion, improvement, and practice”. Adhering to the concept of “Students first, consolidation of foundation, combination of preparatory and transitional education, and quality improvement”, SPE has strengthened the educational and management features of “care without indulgence, equality without privileges, and strictness without rigor”.
Currently, backed by the “One Body and Two Wings” development strategy of SWUN, SPE keeps to internal development and continued innovation, so as to continuously make contributions to building SWUN into an outstanding base with “salient features, high educational quality, and top management”.
